cake decorating class and my first masterpiece

on the 25Th of august, i went to a 6-hour cake decorating class in

CHANG THUNG SDN. BHD
26 JLN SS24/13
TAMAN MEGAH
TEL:03-78049361

Hands-on Cake decorating (level 1)
-latest cake icing method in dome shape cake
-Using fruits and chocolate decoration
-All cakes iced with topping cream (whipping cream)
-Using sponge cake

items needed:
Spatula, wooden/steel turn table, palette knife

its..RM 130 for the class

warning...its not as easy as you think....
the chef (Eric Kwan) demonstrated..it looked so simple. but when we tried it out on out own sponge cake....
ermmm...
mine was a mess...
i did, take out the cream and do again...
there were a few regulers, who got it the first time. wah, like pro...
most of the participants were "aunties".ladies of leisure.
hahhaha
i think i was the youngest one there.
here are some of the chef's masterpiece.

this one is done with whipping cream, melted chocolate and fruits

this one is very very complicated!
it is done with just whipping cream and strawberry topping jam. very cute and classic

this is done with green tea powder and fruits.

this is made using chocolate decoration which are so fun and simple to make =)
and also fruits.
strawberries, canned peaches, kiwi fruit, grapes can be used.
we were also taught how to make chocolate fan and butterfly wings.

this is very beautiful. and so complicated. needs lots of skill >.<
which i don't possess at the moment.

overall, the class was really good.It taught us the basic techniques and the rest..well, the sky (and my skill) is the limit...

so the very next day (with inspiration) i tried my very first cake..for my dear friend bee ling's birthday.
(with the help with my mummy and sister)
using the sponge cake mix, i made a plain sponge cake...
and whipped the whipping cream

got ready the chocolate decorations

the fruits for deco..

presenting my masterpiece! its sort of my own design. improvised and combined the ones i learned from the class =)

and we (jane, ing swan, james, my sister and I) surprised her on monday..belated
b'day.

it was so much fun! =D
definitely going to make more cakes in the future.hehe

yoga poses

photos of me practising yoga at home. since the people in the studio didn't allow me to take photographs in the studio, guess i have to do it at home..

Relaxation with proper breathing before every yoga session is important. It revitalizes the entire body, balances the emotions and promotes the clarity of mind.

Bhujangasana- the Cobra pose. This pose helps to align the spinal discs, strengthen the back and energizes the nervous system.

Natarajasana- the Cosmic dancer. This posture develops focus and balance and stretches the upper body.

*not exactly the real thing. not that flexible =p

Virabhadrasana- the Warrior pose. This posture strengthens your legs, back, shoulders, and arms, building stamina. It opens your hips and chest, and improves balance. This is an excellent exercise to start a number of backbends with. The lower back gets relaxed, the leg muscles are stretched and you build up strength in your legs. You also improve your coordination and concentration.

In the Downward Facing Dog Pose, you build up strength in the upper arms and you give space and opening in the back, neck, chest, hips and shoulders. If you let your ankles sink nicely to the floor in this asana, you stretch the calves at the same time. In Yoga, this pose is often used as an exercise in between other exercises, but it is in fact an exercise in itself.

The Child Pose is a relaxation pose which is used to normalize the circulation and to give a counter stretch to the spine. It is a resting pose that can be done to precede or follow any pose. Performing the Child Pose stretches the hips, thighs and ankles gently. It also helps relieve stress and fatigue, and calms the brain.

2. long awited super anticipated day

after 5 weeks and 5 days of being apart from my boyfriend, actually across the south China sea, it was so good to see him again!
went to The Curve to watch a movie and eat eat eat.
We watched secret a mandarin movie, directed and starring jay Chou (the multi-talented guy) he can sing, play the piano so well, act and now direct a movie! wow.
It was a good show. a bit slow at first, but it intensifies halfway through. the big secret is *shhhh* go and find out yourself. but its something out of the norm.not your typical i-guessed-it-storyline. very creative.

"Secret", an original story written by Chou, deals with the memory of first love through high school lovers, Lun (Chou) and Yu (Kwai Lun-Mei). Music is a key element of the romantic drama in which Chou composed and sang the eponymous theme song, "Secret".

Want to know a little about the plot? The first day Lun (Chou) enters Tamkang Secondary School, he meets Yu (Kwai Lun-Mei) in the music room. She is playing a mysterious piano solo. The two become intimate friends and spend a lot of time together. He often asks her "What's the melody you played the first day we met?" but Yu unfailingly replies: "That's my secret."

One day, Lun asks Yu to meet him in the music room but Yu never showed up. Lun cannot find her. Later, Lun sees Yu in an old photograph and what surprises him is that Yu is standing next to his father, Chiu (Anthony Wong) in the photo!

http://www.cinemaonline.com.my/news/news.asp?search=jay_secret
I enjoyed this movie alot. I loved piano playing scenes, where their fingers were practically flying across the keyboards.

Food review next.
We had lunch before our movie at Le Marche cos James wanted to try it.
so we went in and got two "passports"
i ordered cheeses rosti, some potato dish.
IT WAS BURNT!
the bottom was charred and black. yuck!
but the top and sides were ok. and the cheese was yummy.
IT WAS BURNT!

and James ordered a seafood platter. with mussels, prawns, White fish, salmon fish, mashed potato and salad.
it was not bad. the mash potato was heavenly.
and i tried mussels for the first time. hmmm...not too bad.

and for desert..we had savory crepe.
some sort of pancake but much thinner. It was filled with cubes of turkey ham, capsicum, melted cheese, mushroom. Delicious.

and something else i tried last time also in Le Marche. Their tiramisu. Can't remember how it tasted but i think it was OK.

the atmosphere and deco is fantastic, something i really like about this place =)
it's special cos it has many different "themes".
but its rather pricey though...

Le marche is from Switzerland..

then for tea time, we went to Paddington house of pancakes.

i orded their tea time set, valid from 3.00 pm until 5.30pM from mondays to fridays. Its RM 12.80++ for pancakes (a set menu for every-day) and tea.
Thursday was banana with cinnamon, chocolate honeycomb butter and vanilla ice cream. it is served with maple syrup.

James had this savory pancake. With a slice of ham, cheese, egg, hash brown, caramelizes onions, tomatoes and lettuce. a complete meal all on its own. oh, and the gravy that accompanied it is to die for. mm-mm. it was really good.

and this is something i had when i came with my family last time. a very desert-ish pancake. with chocolate sauce, almond slices, a dollop of whipped cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, strawberries and blueberries.yummy yummy =)

a sweet ending to a perfect day! =)

potential blog overload

here are the things i need to blog about
1. yoga, again
2. my long awaited, super anticipated date with James (along with a review on secret, jay chou's new movie and food review on Le Marche and Paddington house of pancakes) after not seeing him for one month plus
3. cake decorating class. which was hmmm...not really what i expected. need alot of practise. so tiring. but it was fun. more details soon to come...

the hairdresser chopped off alot of my hair before curling it.

nutella cheescake

here is another recipe.
nutella cheesecake.

yummy versatile nutella. yummy on bread, crackers, and even in cheese cake

ingredients

for the base
10 cream filled chocolate cookies (eg:oreo) crushed (don't remove the cream)
2 tablespoon melted butter

for the cake
450g cream cheese, room temperature
2 large eggs
3 tablespoon brown sugar
1/3 teaspoon vanilla essence
2 1/3 tablespoon cornflour
150g nutella
75 ml milk
75 ml whipping cream

method
for the base:
1. crush the cookies forming crumbs.
2. mix the melted butter into cookie crumbs.
3. place the cookie crumbs into a spring foam pan* and press it evenly so it covers the whole pan
4. refrigerate the pan

for the cake
1. Beat cream cheese and brown sugar until smooth
2. Add vanilla essence and cornflour and nutella
3. Lower the speed of the mixer and add the eggs one at a time.
4. Add whipping cream and milk and mix till well incorporated.

5. take out the prepared pan (with cookie crumb base) and pour the batter into the pan

6. preheat the oven to 160 degrees celcius
7. (ok, here comes the trick part, pay attention) wrap the bottom and sides of the spring foam pan with aluminium foil (so water won't seep in) take another larger pan. place the spring foam pan inside it. pour some water into the larger pan. maybe about halfway the spring foam pan. this is called water bath i think

8. place the whole thing into preheated oven and bake it for 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes (or until it sets)
9. leave the cake in the oven for 30 minutes with the door closed. and another 30 minutes with the door open.
10. chill 6 hours before unmoulding. (if you can stand waiting =p)

11. this is optional. topping. i melted about 60 g dark chocolate and spread it on the cake. simple. making it a chocoholic's delight =)

types of yoga

confused by so many many types of yoga?
here are some examples and a brief (maybe not so) explanation...

i. Hatha yoga
What most people refer to as simply "yoga" is actually Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is a system of yoga introduced by Yogi Swatmarama, a yogic sage in the 15th century in India. This particular system of yoga is the most popular one, and it is from which several other Styles of Yoga originated including Power Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, and Kundalini Yoga. The word "hatha" comes from the Sanskrit terms "ha" meaning "sun" and "tha" meaning "moon”. Hatha yoga emphasizes the opposing forces I the body such as masculine energy and feminine energy, left and right, inhalation and exhalation, joy and sadness, and so on, thereby restoring the body to to its natural equilibrium. Forward bends are followed by backward bends, standing postures by the inversion, contractions by expansions, and movement to the left by movement to the right. It concentrates on the third (Asana) and fourth (Pranayama) steps in the Eight Limbs of Yoga. Hatha Yoga tries to achieve balance between body and mind, as well as attempts to free the more subtle spiritual elements of the mind through physical poses or Asanas, Breathing Techniques or Pranayama, and Meditation.

ii. Yin yoga
Yin yoga is a quiet and profound practice of relaxed floor posture that is help for 3 to 5 minutes. It combines the theories derived from Taoism as well as Chinese medicine and beliefs.
Nowadays most of us are familiar with the term’s yin and yang, although many people are unsure exactly what they mean. Yin and Yang are a pair of opposites that complement one another. Objects that are Yang in nature are usually higher brighter more superficial, masculine, more mobile and more elastic. Those we might describe, as Yin would be more earth bound, lower discrete, hidden, more feminine, less mobile and less elastic.
Yin yoga would be used to complement more active practices, alongside an active yoga practice or by people who maybe have a muscle orientated workout down at the gym.
Most styles of yoga are yang in nature, they focus on improving the flexibility as well as strength of muscle tissues. Muscle tissue is Yang in nature; it is very elastic and is made up of around 70 percent fluid. When we work our muscle tissues, this raises to about 90 percent.
Tissues that would be described as Yin include the deep connective tissues of the body, ligaments fascia and the bones themselves, these do not have the same fluid content and are therefore less mobile and less elastic. Connective tissues shrink-wrap our joints and this is necessary and appropriate when we are doing an active yoga practice. It prevents injury and protects the joints. But in our Yin practice we are still and passive so we are able to actually stretch the joints and the connective tissues surrounding them. Helping our joints to stay moist and supple into our old age rather than drying out and becoming stiff and immobile.

iii. Ashtanga yoga.
Ashtanga Yoga is the Style of Yoga developed by K. Pattabhi Jois. It literally means Eight Limb Yoga and revolves in Pattanjali's idea that the path of purification is composed of eight spiritual practices. (Refer to the Eight Limbs of Yoga)
Asthanga is a vigorous form that builds up intense heat, intended to purify the muscle and organs, expel impurities and release hormones to nourish the skin. The fast sequences originally kept warriors fit, and they are an all-round exercise for flexibility, strength and cardiovascular fitness.

iv. Yogilates
Yogilates is created by certified Pilates and Yoga instructor Jonathan Urla, Yogilates fuses Hatha Yoga and Pilates to give practitioners “more rapid and balanced development of their bodies than when either discipline is performed separately.”
German-born Joseph H. Pilates (1880-1968) introduced Pilates to the United States in 1926. Pilates improves flexibility of the spine, posture, breathing and alignment. Some believe that it strengthens the core better than any exercise ever invented. Important elements include: the placement of the breath in the ribs, articulating the spine, stabilizing the pelvis and shoulders for better balance and an emphasis on linking movements together in a graceful and flowing way. This helps to develop coordination and concentration. Although the focus of Pilates centers on flexibility, strength and balance, practitioners walk away with a long, lean and toned body. Its difference from yoga is that it focuses less on the breathing and more on the physical movements.
Though there are differences, posture, flexibility, coordination, and balance are all achievable in both Yoga and Pilates.
Through the ingenious combination of pilates and yoga, the result is an overall fitness workout that strengthens the body and relaxes the mind. A session is often 75-minute long. Usually accompanying by a soothing music, yogilates is lead by the instructor in a step-by-step series of floor exercises that involves mat work exercises of yoga and pilates. When the body is warmed-up from this, the session will then advance to a more challenging standing work. The culminating activity is a deep and relaxing meditation. Yogilates relieves stress, helps you gain coordination and balance, lose weight, and allows you to relax all at the same time. In a nutshell Yogilates brings precise alignment, core strength and knowledge from exercise science to the postures of yoga for added safety and a greater transformative effect.

v. Others
• Contact yoga is practiced with a partner, requiring good co-operation and balance
• Bikiram yoga consists of movements in a room heated to above body temperature to allow the muscle to stretch more while impurities are washed out on a tide of perspiration
• Dru yoga is a very gentle, peaceful form that includes relaxation and working as a group
• Iyengar yoga is the best known form outside India. Detailed poses (asanas) are carried out with great attention to technique
• Kundalini yoga is an esoteric form that aims for enlightenment through the release of the energy up the spine. This is achieved through stretching, breathing exercise, chanting and meditation.

oriental cravings

as promised, a food review

ORIENTAL CRAVINGS
G359, PHASE 2, ONE UTAMA
Tel no: 03-77272581

like the name of the restaurant suggests, its menu comprises of oriental, traditional chinese food. They have fried rice, noodles, or dishes to be eaten with rice...and even light food: toast bread..

we ordered HONEY GLAZED CHICKEN WINGS. It tastes strongly of marmite with a hint of honey. Its deep fried and covered with the sticky honey-marmite sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Delicious =) i loved the sauce.

this is their specialty, since they have the picture in front of their menu.
lotus root with petai. since we are not a big fan of petai, we ordered it without the petai..hmmm..how was this dish? i didn't really like it because it was practically laced with strips of ginger!my mum loved it so much. i was busy picking out the ginger slices. (yes, i'm a very picky eater) it was not bad. the lotus root was crunchy and nice.that's all. this dish would be fantastic for someone who loves ginger.

and the final dish. something weird and different. This is the first time I've had this dish. Beancurd with mushroom. my mum said it was "too-fu kang" or something like that. The gravy is very thick but it wasn't too starchy. Its like drinking soup. There are pieces of japanese white tofu, mushroom slices, meat and some vegetables. It was nice =) and healthy i think. very interesting dish =p

the price.
quite pricey, i must say. The four of us had 3 dishes, 3 bowls of rice and no drinks. the bill came up to 60 ringgit..
overall rating. can give a 6 to 6.5 la.

and naturally, all the female bunnies will go berserk and start making weird noises. coo-ing noises. like chicken. haha. its so amusing.
and baybee yuen naik miang with the two male bunnies. when its her turn to go out, she will dash to their cages and start marking territory (by rubbing their cages with her face) such a comical sight...
and she still seems to prefer the older bunny.

this is hothot/angopi. the pretty boy.

this is gora-gora, angopi's father. who seems to be everyone's favourite.i wonder why.

yuen yuen naik miang

convocation

i attended my sister's convocation today at sheraton subang(5 minutes away from my house)
she graduated with Master of Pharmacy (IMU-Stratclyde pharmacy programme) with distinction!!
it was a good opportunity to wear the baju kebarung! haha! the same one my sister wore for her convocation at University of Stratclyde (which unfortunately, i didn't get to attend. sob sob)
we went there not-so-early. they closed all the parkings already! had to park opposite the road, and had to walk quite far. i was so kekok wearing the baju kebarung. no practise walking you see. never worn a baju kurung since my high school days.
saw many colourful bouquets of flowers, teddy bears with mortar board. still cannot locate mashi maro with mortar board. :(
took a seat in the ballroom and a few rows away, there was this lady holding a bouquet of sunflowers with a mashimaro wearing a mortar board. it was sooooo cute!!!
anyway, the ceremony was..well like a convocation la. haha.
speeches, and conferment of the graduating students.
congrats to all of you!! ^^
and i was thinking..hmm..i'll be attending my own convocation next year (if all goes well)

gorgeous bouquet of roses from my sister's bf. bright sunny yellow and classic red.
now there are three bouquet of roses st home. two dried ones. and one fresh blooming one ;)

why am i carrying the flowers???

something looks wrong
me being gatal stole the mortar board to wear, can officially wear it in..erm...three and a half years time (and yet again. if all goes well)
after the ceremony there was the reception (something i was looking forward too. hahah!!) and lots of photo taking.
looking forward to my own convocation!!
